Ultramarine Requiem

Ultramarine Requiem / Spectral Taxonomy (Marine Elegies) / 2025

Ultramarine Requiem operates through whisper rather than proclamation – a meditation on the quieter registers of loss.

Not all grief announces itself through violence. Some simply fades. Like colour draining from coral, like depth becoming translucence, like the slow drift of marine snow in dying oceans.

The work comprises of 46 hand-torn lamellae of Hahnemühle Britannia paper and vellum, arranged horizontally to suggest both scientific taxonomy and descent through ocean strata. Each sheet is stained with botanical teas – rooibos, green tea, black tea – then receives multiple transparent washes of ultramarine and Prussian blue inks applied to pre-distressed surfaces. The paper is worked before colour touches it, already compromised, already carrying stress.

The choice of ultramarine is deliberate. Once ground from lapis lazuli and more precious than gold, this pigment carried sacred weight in art history. Here, it becomes spectral – a memory of colour drained into translucence.

Edges fray. Surfaces emboss with patterns that echo coral structures. Some lamellae remain crisp while others dissolve into the deep blue backing, creating visual uncertainty about where one form ends and another begins. A formal echo of ecosystem collapse.

Across a single horizontal line, the haiku reads:

Frosted silence speak
Depths unravel into blue
Loss stains the still sea

Its whisper dissolves from left to right, like waves erasing their trace on sand.

The composition is grounded in the golden ratio – a quiet rhythm of balance that holds both mourning and beauty together. The predominantly cool palette creates contemplative distance, inviting meditation rather than alarm.

Ultramarine Requiem unfolds like currents, like breath, like the slow drift of loss across the sea. This is documentation as lament performed in a minor key.

In silence. In blue.
